Jack Dorsey's new social platform Bluesky is now available to all users

Bluesky, the new social network backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, now allows anyone to create an account and become a member of the platform

Anyone who wants can now open an account on Bluesky, which is supported by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

Until Tuesday, those who wanted to join Bluesky needed an invitation, which usually meant requesting an invitation from an existing member.

This invitation period gives the site time to install moderation tools and other features, Bluesky said.

Bluesky is similar in many ways to Twitter, which Elon Musk renamed X after buying it for $44 billion, but it doesn’t yet offer direct messaging between users.

Bluesky offers more customization options to its users, but it remains to be seen whether they will like it or not.

It also displays posts from accounts you follow chronologically, while also allowing you to jump to algorithm-driven timelines created by other users.

The platform does its own moderation but plans to allow its users to incorporate alternative moderation schemes in the near future.

Once fully active, Bluesky plans to give users freer leeway by allowing them to migrate their friends, followers, and other data to rival social networks.

The company promotes this feature as “the last social account you’ll ever need to create.” In theory, users aim to become a different platform with their Bluesky accounts.

But in practice, it probably won’t be that easy. The technical term for making social networks interoperable in this way is “federation,” and it turns out there is more than one way sites can federate.

For example, Mastodon and similar microblogging sites – including Meta’s Threads service – allow users to move between these sites using a federation algorithm called ActivityPub.

“Making Threads interoperable will give people more options for how they interact and help content reach more people,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Threads post in December.

In response, Bluesky has adopted a federation algorithm called Authenticated Transfer Protocol and is the only service to use it so far.

A ‘frequently asked questions’ page for the protocol argues that ActivityPub makes transferring accounts cumbersome and lacks other important features.
